Foot orthotics are special medical devices that foot doctors recommend to help with specific foot problems or to fix the way you walk. These orthotics are made just for you, based on your feet and what you need. You wear them inside your shoes to support your feet and help them feel better.
What Conditions Can Orthotics Treat?
Custom orthotics are specially made inserts for your shoes that can help with different foot pains and problems with moving around, such as:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Arthritis
- Bursitis
- Heel spurs
- Bunions
- Fat feet
- High arches
- Improper foot alignment
- Gait disorders caused by pronation or supination issues
- Balance issues
How Are Custom Orthotics Made?
Prescription orthotics are made just for each person's feet. The foot doctor takes a mold of your foot using either plaster or a 3D scanner. Then, based on what the foot doctor says you need, the orthotic is made using strong, durable materials to help with different foot problems.
Rigid Orthotics.Rigid or functional orthotics are usually crafted from sturdy stuff like carbon fiber or plastic. They’re made to manage how your joints move and work. They're helpful for muscle strain, foot pain, flat feet, Achilles tendonitis, sesamoiditis, and pain in the lower back, legs, and thighs.
Soft or accommodative orthotics. These devices are created using softer, bendable materials like EVA foam or gel. They’re made to reduce pressure and provide cushioning for parts of the feet that are sore or uncomfortable. They can be used to stop and treat conditions like diabetic foot ulcers, plantar fasciitis, and others.
Semi-rigid orthotics. These orthotics blend the support of a rigid one with the comfort of a soft one. They use softer materials that are strengthened by tougher ones. They're commonly used to help with balance during walking or sports, or to fix flat feet or unusual walking patterns in kids who are learning to walk.
Discuss custom orthotics with your foot doctor to see if they can help ease your pain or fix any problems with how you walk or stand.
